  8. GENERAL 
  9. INFORMATION:   A couple of FYIs have been distributed on the following error,
  10.                but some confusion regarding the issue still exists.  Here
  11.                are my findings on the problem.

  13. ERROR:         Rename returned an error code of -1
  14.  
  15. DESCRIPTION:   An attempt to rename the file "DRVRDATA.DAT to DRVRDATA.BAK"
  16.                failed.
  17.  
  18. SEVERITY:      The current operation cannot be completed.
  19.  
  20.                This error occurs in NETGEN when using a shell newer than
  21.                v2.15C. (We have tested up through v3.01 Rev. B.)  It only
  22.                occurs if the system being generated is v2.15a or older and
  23.                the file DRVRDATA.DAT does NOT exist on the SUPPORT directory
  24.                (the file does not exist prior to the first generation).  You
  25.                will see the error after choosing the option "Save Selections
  26.                and Continue".

  28.                The version of the server you are attached to makes no
  29.                difference.  We witnessed the same results on v2.15C, v3.0,
  30.                and v3.1.  The shell is the problem.  The return code is being
  31.                interpreted incorrectly.

  33. SOLUTION:      If this error is encountered, check the SUPPORT directory for
  34.                the file DRVRDATA.DAT.  The file will not be there.  If it is
  35.                there, then it is probably corrupted.  Rename it and if there
  36.                is a DRVRDATA.BAK file. then rename it also.  Create the file
  37.                using COPY CON.  (It doesn't matter how large or what it
  38.                contains.)  Now, perform a NETGEN -N.  (The -N option must be
  39.                used or NETGEN will try to read DRVRDATA.DAT!)

  41.                This should get them through the initial installation.  Now
  42.                a valid DRVRDATA.DAT will exist and the problem should no
  43.                longer occur.

  45. COMMENTS:      Here is a bit of additional information regarding this error.
  46.  
  47.                An additional solution not mentioned in the original message
  48.                is to use the v2.15a shell.  This version does not have the
  49.                problem when trying to open the nonexistent file.
  50.  
  51.                We have also tested the v3.01 Rev. C (BETA) shells.  They fail
  52.                as well.  They report the error described above.  The same
  53.                work around can be used.

  55.                This has been reported to Engineering.
